Wrath of The Titans

History repeats itself.........a very old proverb but is still relevant in these times.
I have become a movie freak in Chennai with a movie in my list every Saturday, but to my surprise the movies i went for so far were not only good but also restored my faith in Hindi movies. Thanks to solo brilliance from Irrfaan in PAAN SINGH TOMAR and Vidya Balan in KAHAANI.., awesome acting, editing, screenplay and most important, the soul of movie didn't shift into non-sense mathematics of commercial cinema.

And this weekend, it was one of my old buddy "TITANS", about whom i had, had a very nasty time back in 2010. Over the same platform of Point Blank, i had to pour my frustration after watching the dead "Clash of the Titans".

Lets start with the background :

I planned to watch this movie coz of 2 reasons:
1. Big canvas movie in 3D
2. To quench my thirst for some jaw dropping effects.

therefore, i went to Escape in Express Avenue Mall, the only place to hangout for a North-Indian in chennai. I had done my research well ahead of booking and i was assured of the improved screenplay and special effects in this sequel. But just mints before the movie, i happen to meet couple of my colleagues who had their time with titans and they faced the wrath of buying the tickets. They were all gunning about the bad parts of the action flick but i assuaged my turbulent soul in the same way, as i do always, ..."Baaton par na jao, apni akal lagao".

Time : 4.30 pm, movie is likely to start and i am all set for a heroic journey to the unknown lands of Greece.

The story starts exactly where it had its end in the previous marvel, Perseus has become a normal fisherman and to my surprise his wife is dead and has got a 10 year old sun 'Helius' (who incidentally makes a wooden dagger, which becomes all important in later part of the movie).

I forgot to mention the special effect in the initial part of Casting where everything comes on screen in the form of glowing fire balled alphabets, really it set a good tone to the movie.

The characters are well casted this time with well known faces like Liam Nesson as Zeus, Rosamund Pike as Queen Andromeda, Edgar Ramirez as Ares and yet again Sam Worthington as demi-god Perseus.

So the story is plain and simple :

The humans have stopped worshiping Gods and this has made Gods weak. To the worse, Gods who were immortal have become vulnerable to death. With the weakening scenario all around, Zeus, is afraid of weakening of "Tartarus", the jail in the underworld where the father of Zeus, Kronos (who was overthrown by Zeus) is kept in dark. The walls of Tartarus are breaking which unleashes demons like Chimera, a two headed demon who attacks the village of Perseus. (*The fight sequence is shot beautifully and gives some high energy boosters to stick to your chair.)

Next comes the turning point when, Ares and Hades join hands and betray Zeus, they plan to set free Kronos and in turn expect immortality for themselves. Zeus is captured and taken to Tartarus so that Kronos can drain his energy out and set himself free. (* the draining of energy of Zues is very innovative and the mould of lava scene of dripping energy of Zeus.)

Then starts the journey of Perseus, a journey to save the earth and to set free his captured father the Zeus. He gets company in the form of Agenor, yet another demi-god ,son of Poseidon and Queen Andromeda, a real sparkle on screen.

They set sail in search of another God who had made the war-heads of Gods and had designed Tartarus. In order to find him, Perseus defeats one eyed Cyclopes.
(* Cyclopes and the fight in the woods is refreshing and innovative. The scenes where cyclopes run down the trees give a pleasing appraisal to new thinking of director.)

Then comes the real feast in the form of Labyrinth and the Tartarus. Perseus and team gets into the Labyrinth and i must say the imagination is at its best here in this sequence of 8-10mints. (* the feast starts with the rotating Labyrinth and moves on intact with the shifting of the walls. The fight with the Minotaur is a distraction as for first 45-60 sec, it is almost confusing, whom Perseus fighting with.)

Then they enter into the Tartarus, Hades changes his mind and helps Zeus, they move out with injured Zeus but in the meantime, Kronos breaks out of Tartarus.

Now, the plot is ready for the grand finale the CLIMAX :

TRIUM is required to kill Kronos, but the Thunderbolt of Zeus is with Ares, so Perseus calls him for a head on battle. Interestingly, Ares brings Helius along so that he can see his father dying. The dual between the two is not refreshing and doesn't attract attention much. Ares overpowers Perseus with ease but is distracted by poor Helius who holds the sword of Perseus ( Interestingly, he holds the same sword in the end when Perseus gives to him and he says, its heavy. May be he din't felt the weight earlier in the heat of fight.)

With the help of this distraction, Perseus catches hold of Ares and kills him with the Thunderbolt. And, then he joins all warheads to make the TRIUM.

Then, Pegasus takes him to the battle field where Kronos has already overpowered Zeus and Hades.

The last 5 mints carries the best part of the movie:

Positive : The 2 headed demons coming out of fireballs give a pleasant feast to the eyes. 3D effect works best when they slaughter army of Andromeda and the further heroics from Hades and Zeus give a fittingly reply to these demons. The next part of the fight which involves, Zeus+Hades against all powerful Kronos gives a special feel
to the action lovers but in the meantime, it also gives Perseus to get into the act and cut the Throat of Kronos and put the Trium into the stomach of Kronos.

Thus this culminates into the fall of Kronos, a great treat to eyes, though looked as if copied from epic scene of Hiroshima atomic blast of World war II.

Now lets move ahead of the story, lets come to the thing what i do best "Criticism".

First the Positives:

1. Big Canvas movie
2. Sensible 3D effects
3. Extraordinary portrayal of Tartarus and the moving Labyrinth.
4. Cyclopes and the fight in the woods.
5. Agenor whose comic presence made some sense at times.
6. Beautiful Rosamund Pike with her seductive looks.
7. Chimera, unseen demons (twin demons) gives all new positive to the movie.
8. Kronos, portrayal of his hands of moulds of lava is really fascinating.
9. Acting of Liam Nesson as Zeus is heartening to see.

Negatives:

1. Editing is again sick.
2. Movie needed some narration about Kronos, Tartarus, Minotaur.
3. Director failed partly to keep the pace in the middle of storyboard.
4. Acting of Worthington is again a sad story.
5. Role of Andromeda, what was she doing in the movie(?) (worth just for a kiss)
6. Fight with Minotaur in the Labyrinth was the worst part of the movie (unnecessary)

************************************************************************************

To conclude about the movie:

With huge expectations around this time again, this film does a decent job in keeping the faith of fans. With its negatives and positives, this movie runs well and keeps you stick to your seat. 3D effect makes this movie worth a watch.

As you can see, 6 negatives against 9 positives, this movie gets a thumbs up from my side.

In the end of battle, Zeus asks Persues,"you drew inspiration from your son"?
Persues nodds his head in positive and says 'YES'!!

Zeus smiles and says, "Even I got from my son"!!!!!

But i see the scene illustrated above as "WRATH OF THE TITANS" got inspiration from its previous avataar "CLASH OF THE TITANS".

The movie ends with Helius getting sword from his father which gives ample speculation to further sequel to the series of Titans......My wait starts...

‘Rainbow"

its a story in the backdrop of recent Mumbai blast at 6:53 pm in dadar, where a person dies.this is the last page of his life....... 7:30 am A lazy morning in Mumbai, sunlight is filtering through the curtains and on the bed, I am lazily thinking about priorities of my day. I have office at 9, meet with international clients at 11, prepare for tomorrows presentation till 4, then have meeting with boss at 6, hummff that’s it for the day!!! No, no I forgot one thing I have to go to car machanic for wheel alignment as well but before 7 pm at any cost. Well, after getting all the days business set in my mind, I dug my face again in the pillow and fell asleep only when a screaming sound made entry over my ear drums “aaj to Bandar-Bandariya ki shaadi ho rahi hai”(today monkey couple are marrying eachother)…..it was my little kido “Saniya” whom we all call Sana. She jumped over my belly and said,”papa, dekho na bahar kitna acha lag raha hai, barish aur dhoop sath sath”. I grazed out of...

AN INDIAN'S CRY.............

An Indians’ CRY….... Marathi Manoooooos……………whats that??? I acknowledge only one manoooos…………..the common man! The common man ---R.K.LAXMAN’S COMMON MAN! Indian middle class who is always sandwiched between the rocky roughness of corruption and politics. Once again this has happening in Maharashtra. I don’t understand few things what Mr. SWAR _Raj wants to convey as Marathi pride……… 1) Where was Raj, when there were thousands of MARATHI MANOOS committing suicide in Vidarbha and Marathwada.? ( still suicides are prevalent) 2) Where was Raj, when terrorists rocked Mumbai in December last year? ( in his safe house) 3) Where was Raj, when there were 1993 riots? ( Was he a child that time, a spoon fed baby) These three questions are like triangle problem to me whose angles are so obtuse that it is difficult to figure out the area of the triangle. I don’t understand, what they gonna provide to Marathi common man? 1) an identity of ruckus? 2) an identity of mindless g...

Be Moral : make a new beginning!!!

“At the cash counter of civil hospital in the city of Lucknow, there was a spat going on. A young boy, (roughly around 16-17yrs old, clad in untidy clothes, unshaved and with wet eyes) was having a heated debate with the counter man, who on the opposite side of the window, was throwing typical hot-words. Nobody around were looking interested in the debate, but were firmly enjoying the drama with loads of enthusiasm. I was moving towards parking after meeting my relative who was admitted over there, but looks of the boy compelled me to get into the spat. I went to the counter & asked the boy ,”what happened, bhai”? He glanced & tried to figure out whether I am related to the hospital or not, when he failed to assess, he replied, “I need the final bills to get cleared but the counter man says to come after 3 pm”. I looked at my watch, it was 11:45 am, as is apparent, Govt. employees work only post lunch, in the similar fashion, a time of 3:30pm was wisely advised. Then I sug...
