Again another blast........understand IED!!

Again A blast rocked Mumbai few hours back. Police says, its an IED blast by unknown terrorists. But i am puzzled with the fact that gradually Indian forces & authorities have shifted from RDX to IED in last few years.

Lets see, what IED is and is it is deadly enough to trigger mass destruction.

Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs

: Overview
An IED can be imagined with any type of material and initiator. It is a "homemade" device that is designed to cause death or injury by using explosives alone or in combination with toxic chemicals, biological toxins, or radiological material. IEDs can be produced in varying sizes, functioning methods, containers, and delivery methods. IEDs can utilize commercial or military explosives, homemade explosives, or military ordnance and ordnance components.

They are unique in nature because the IED builder has had to improvise with the materials at hand. Designed to defeat a specific target or type of target, they generally become more difficult to detect and protect against as they become more sophisticated.

IEDs may be used in terrorist actions or in unconventional warfare by guerrillas or commando forces in a theater of operations. In the second Iraq War, IEDs were used extensively against coalition forces and by the end of 2007 they had become responsible for approximately 64% of coalition deaths in Iraq. They are also used in Afghanistan by insurgent groups, and have caused over 66% of the coalition casualties in the 2001–present Afghanistan War.

IEDs fall into three types of categories:

Package Type IED
Vehicle-Borne IEDs (VBIEDs)
Suicide Bomb IED

Though they can vary widely in shape and form, IEDs share a common set of components and consist of the following:

A switch/trigger;
An initiator (fuze);
Main charge (explosive fill);
A power source for the switch/trigger; and
A container.

Improvised devices are characterized by varying employment techniques. In most of the techniques shown below, an unexploded ordnance (UXO) can easily be engineered to replace a mine or explosive device using one of the several following techniques:

Coupling. Coupling is a method of linking one mine or explosive device to another, usually with detonating cord. When the first device is detonated, it also detonates the linked explosive. This technique is often used to defeat countermine equipment, such as mine rollers

Rolling. The roller will pass over the initial, unfuzed device and set off the second fuzed device. This in turn detonates the overpassed device underneath the clearing vehicle. When the linked devices are directional fragmentation mines, they can create a large, lethal engagement area.

Boosting. Buried mines, UXOs, or other explosive devices are stacked on top of one another. The device buried deepest from the surface is fuzed. Fuzing only the deepest ordnance helps mask no- and low-metal explosive hazards placed near the surface. This reduces the probability of detection by metal detectors, and it increases the force of the blast.

Sensitizing antitank (AT) mines. On some nonmetallic AT mines, the pressure plate is cracked and the spring is removed to reduce the pressure required to initiate the mine. Similarly, the pressure plate can be removed from metallic AT mines to create the same effect. A pressurefuzed AP mine can be placed on the top of an AT mine, thus creating a very large AP mine as an alternative method.
Daisy chaining. AP mines may be used in daisy chains linked with other explosive hazards. Enemy forces may link the mines together with trip wire or detonating cord. When the initial mine is detonated, the other mines may detonate. This may also create large, lethal engagement areas.

Booby traps and IEDs are similar to mines in that they are designed to kill or incapacitate personnel. They are also emplaced to avoid detection and improve effectiveness. Most are victim-activated, but some may involve remote or command detonation architectures.

The use of booby traps is limited only by the imagination of the adversary. Booby traps are victim-activated devices intended to create casualties and terror and may or may not be found in areas of tactical significance.

Booby traps:

Are usually explosive in nature.
Are usually activated when an unsuspecting person disturbs an apparently harmless object performs a presumably safe act; for example, souvenir hunting.
Are designed to kill or incapacitate.
Cause unexpected random casualties and damage.
Create an attitude of uncertainty and suspicion, in effect lowering morale and inducing a degree of caution that restricts or slows movement.
Threaten force protection.

so it is imperative that IED can be prepared but a chief ingredient is explosive or chemical used. so an efficient check-point to stop the anti-social people is to stop easy & illegal availability of explosive chemicals in market. But in a country of rampant corruption where simple rock-breaking is done through detonators, it is really difficult to check these incidents.

but lets be together in tough times because this is the only way, India can be saved & we can be strong to weather all adverse conditions......

China's peace flag!!

China bullies India amidst tour of Minister of Defence (MoD) A K Antony to China. I'm still to understand the mindset of Govt Of India when it comes to talk of bilateral n strategic relations with China, Pakistan, Bangladesh.... This is my take on the issue when #China is making mockery of Indian peace initiatives!!

power gone : Jyoti babu

Saturday. time: 7:30 pm venue: a very old architecture with red bricks and wooden chairs along with Teak-tables, a waiter in posh-white outfit reminding me of British era, this place is "Coffee House" in the Civil lines area of Allahabad city. . Over the corner table on my left there were two oldies sitting, not just sitting though, but sipping there coffee. complete silence, a pin-drop per say. only the crumble sound of news-paper, if at all turned. both oldies very so carried away with that news-paper article that they forgot the world around them. sudden electricity fails, one of the two said, Jyoti Babu chole geche !!!! and there was big laugh all around,,,,, i was perplexed what electricity has to do with Jyoti babu?? i asked the gentleman what he meant by that? he offered me a chair and ordered a cup of coffee for me as well. he told me that both are Bengolis and they were part of Communist movement in the late sixties and late seventies whi...

poverty Vs Pragati..............Maharashtra lost the road??

hi friends, i am in mumbai now and certainly i am in the biggest slums in the world...........here people are robots,,,,,running, pushing, slazing .....all sorts of acts and mis-acts are happening here. on one side a pluffy, plush society is there which is having much more than required for their life................on the other there are people who are struggling for making ends meet. i saw on one side people are enjoying the DAY LIGHT at 10PM in sports stadiums (DY Patil stadium) and i found peeple in Parel who are struggling to see some sun light in their slums, chawls in the absense of electricity. the question is not about the diffrerence and the absurd distribution of wealth....but the question is against the civic society which is having plentiful of educated social workers who hail from high society and they do their work just to add up a new feather in the cap.....if i use the banking language, they diversify themselves from just party animals to social workers. anoth...
