Are we getting carried away?

On a micro blogging site, I came across a photograph showing 'a pool of blood on the mid of the road'. You might have also seen that but I found it very interesting as people were claiming it to be shot after recent attack in Baghdad  where more than 200 people lost their lives.

I was about to do what almost all of us do ie., reTweet. But I didn't, instead I went to Google reverse search option to check veracity of the image.

Well we have so many reverse image search sites like TINEYE who give a comprehensive report of the images.

So what did I found?

First, it was not an image of Iraq after the attacks. Second, It was making rounds in social media since 2013 and lastly, I didn't find any credible media house using the image. That image was mostly shared on twitter, facebook or some local blog posts.

One of you might argue that that image might be posted by some random social media user ( not aligned to any media house). Yes, there is possibility but the way media houses of today work, I wonder if they will miss out on the Breaking News opportunity. Now a days, there is tendency to catch the news and make it big or breaking.

Thus, technically after analysis, I didn't find anything to prove that the image was real.

Now lets think for a while, is it possible to use technology to create such image. Answer is plain - YES. Having basic level of Photoshop skill is sufficient to create such image. But the fact is, I am still looking for a credible answer to above image.

In the recent past, I came across another interesting image where  a Palestinian boy was shown shot by Israeli soldier .

Well, people were sharing and commenting on it but when I took little pain to search I found that it was an image from a Movie named , Kingdom of Ants. You can see this scene at 3:41 on this link Video Link .

From these examples what do we learn? probably nothing.

Life will go on its pace, we will keep liking, sharing, RT'ng craps which we come across on social media. We all know this is a huge business now who troll news, troll people and propagate hate through their messages.

These messages hit the negative chord as they have emotional or provocative contents which makes the blood boil (for many at least).

Aren't we getting carried away with our emotions, just think.

Ask your self once : "Are we using Social media or some clever people are using us on Social media?"

If you get any answer, do let me know.

  1. Its part of psyops. If you want to attract people to your cause you must do these and a picture is worth a thousand words, even if its untrue. Even newspaper engage in these stuff, for representation purpose only.

  2. @Soumabrata : Indeed it is. these purported lies are even more dangerous than our imagination. Media houses need to be more responsible and news peddlers need to be restricted. But sadly, we don't have any such mechanism as of now.
